World 30 metre DEM launched
A 30m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) covering 99% of the Earth’s surface has been launched. The data will be free to download and use, and will be more detailed than data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) that has a resolution of 90m. The data should be suitable for creating large scale maps containing shaded relief and hill shading, as well as accurate 3D modelling. The data can be dowloaded in 1 degree tiles.
“The data, comprising 1.3 million images, come from a collaboration between the US space agency Nasa and the Japanese trade ministry. The images were taken by Japan’s and Reflection Radiometer (Aster) aboard the Terra satellite.” BBC Article
