How Housing Associations can increase efficiency through GIS
Housing associations are increasingly turning to GIS mapping software and digital map data to increase operational efficiency and visualise their assets. By converting legacy paper map records and accompanying Excel listings into a GIS solution, the spatially referenced datasets become much more useful for management decision-making. GIS solutions can be deployed via desktop or web-based interfaces. They are highly scalable as further data is added and new users come on board. This article considers some of the ways in which housing associations are benefitting from GIS solutions. The Grounds Maintenance management information used by housing associations can still exist in the form of paper map plots that have been heavily annotated over time to reflect changes in types of open space. Just two examples of where GIS software can increase efficiencies … Read entire article »

Top Countries to Migrate to in the World – Infographic
We found some interesting findings from the World Economic Forum in their 2013 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, released last month. The report looks at 140 countries across the world based on safety and security, environmental sustainability and cultural and natural resources. The report focuses on travel and tourism in the world but you can easily deduce from the findings how desirable a country is to live in. All of the same factors which determine how well a country performs in tourism can be attributed to how attractive that country is to migrate to. An average of nearly 100 respondents per country were polled to provide opinions which were rated on a scale of 0-7. Our infographic on the ‘Top Countries to Migrate to in the World’ illustrates some fascinating opinions on how … Read entire article »

World Obesity Map
Following our Obesity in Europe Map and after recent reports describing how obesity is a threat to world food security we have now created a world obesity map which highlights which countries are effected by the problem. The ‘World Obesity’ map has been created from statistics collated by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Each country has been shaded depending on the percentage its adult population classified as obese. An obese adult is classified as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30. The map uses a Mollweide projection which accurately depicts area proportion, making it a suitable choice for depicting Global statistics. … Read entire article »

Obesity in Europe Map
Tackling population fatness may be critical to world food security and ecological sustainability,’ says prof Ian Roberts, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He argues that the accumulation of body fat is a political, not a personal, problem. Across Europe, the average weight (for men and women) was 70.8kg (11st 2lb). In Asia, this was 57.7kg (9st 1lb). Almost a quarter of British adults are classified as obese. We thought we would illustrate obesity in Europe using data from the World Health Organisation (WHO). The ‘Obesity in Europe’ cartogram demonstrates how distorted the land space becomes when conveyed by the data . It has had its Countries resized according to the estimated total number of obese adults. It uses the Gastner-Newman algorithm to resize country areas by a specific value. The algorithm, … Read entire article »
