How the Health Sector was able to improve communication through mapping

Health organisations of all kinds are increasingly turning to GIS mapping software and cartographic representation.  Maps are a powerful tool for visualising datasets, whether it is patient, customer or service data.  They are also a great way to effectively communicate health issues and trends, such as the geographic distribution of risk or emerging hotspots.  Much health-related data has a spatial element, which can be as simple as an address or postcode.  More and more healthcare and mapping datasets are now in the public domain, and these can often be used together with an organisation’s own data. You just need to choose the right mapping technique and delivery platform to convey the information to your audience. This article gives just a few examples of how different organisations within the healthcare sector were … Read entire article »

Top Countries to Migrate to in the World – Infographic

We found some interesting findings from the World Economic Forum in their 2013 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index, released last month.  The report looks at 140 countries across the world based on safety and security, environmental sustainability and cultural and natural resources. The report focuses on travel and tourism in the world but you can easily deduce from the findings how desirable a country is to live in. All of the same factors which determine how well a country performs in tourism can be attributed to how attractive that country is to migrate to. An average of nearly 100 respondents per country were polled to provide opinions which were rated on a scale of 0-7. Our infographic on the ‘Top Countries to Migrate to in the World’ illustrates some fascinating opinions on how … Read entire article »

World Obesity Map

Following our Obesity in Europe Map and after recent reports describing how obesity is a threat to world food security we have now created a world obesity map which highlights which countries are effected by the problem. The ‘World Obesity’ map has been created from statistics collated by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Each country has been shaded depending on the percentage its adult population classified as obese. An obese adult is classified as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30. The map uses a Mollweide projection which accurately depicts area proportion, making it a suitable choice for depicting Global statistics. … Read entire article »

Obesity in Europe Map

Tackling population fatness may be critical to world food security and ecological sustainability,’ says prof Ian Roberts, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He argues that the accumulation of body fat is a political, not a personal, problem. Across Europe, the average weight (for men and women) was 70.8kg (11st 2lb). In Asia, this was 57.7kg (9st 1lb). Almost a quarter of British adults are classified as obese. We thought we would illustrate obesity in Europe using data from the World Health Organisation (WHO). The ‘Obesity in Europe’ cartogram demonstrates how distorted the land space becomes when conveyed by the data . It has had its Countries resized according to the estimated total number of obese adults. It uses the Gastner-Newman algorithm to resize country areas by a specific value. The algorithm, … Read entire article »

Olympic Medal Cartogram World Map

If a Country’s size was represented by the amount of Olympic medals won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics then the world map may look something like the image above. Noticeable Countries which have grown due to their medal tally are Great Britain with an impressive 19 gold medals, South Korea (13 gold medals) and Japan (9 gold medals). Countries that appear to have shrunk in relation to podium places are Canada and Brazil. The Olympic Cartogram was created by the Lovell Johns mapping experts using 2008 Olympic Medal Table Data to quickly and easily convey the achievements by participating countries during the 2008 Summer Olympics. It uses the Gastner-Newman algorithm to resize country areas by a specific value, in this case the total number of medals won during the Games. The algorithm, developed … Read entire article »
