Lovell Johns won an RFQ in February 2014 to reproduce 8 Cycling Guides for Surrey County Council. The requirement was to produce royalty- free mapping to replace the A-Z map bases currently in use and to provide print ready files for each of the 8 Guides. The maps were also to be updated for both styling and content.
Lovell Johns proposed a new royalty- free base map using Ordnance Survey OpenData. This base was styled on output from GIS software to replicate the existing mapping content as closely as possible. Surrey provided cycle routes, locations of schools and cycle shops, all of which were added into the map as separate layers to make restyling and future amendment simple. The mapping was also cartographically tidied to address road name orientation and ambiguous junctions.
InDesign software was used to compose the individual Guide templates, including the new text, images and Legend.
The maps were well received by the client and are being distributed around the County.
