Refuse and Recycling
There has never been a greater interest in refuse and recycling. The UK Government has set all Local Authorities statutory recycling targets, which vary across the country. These targets were typically set below 20% in 2003/04 increasing to 40% or more by 2009/10.

Waste reduction is vitally important because it helps protect the environment through a decrease in use of landfill & incineration; it helps reduce the costs of waste disposal and it saves energy and resources by re-using and recycling material.
To help in all these objectives and to assist in meeting the statutory targets, Local Authorities are using a number of strategies, including:
- Waste to compost – councils can issue compost bins to residents to encourage them to compost at home
- Bring bank recycling – residents can take materials for recycling to banks and recycling centres
- Kerbside recycling – councils can collect recycled material from kerbside bins
- Waste minimisation – councils can establish waste minimisation strategies involving targeted sections of the community
- Household waste recycling centres – councils can liaise with County Councils to offer recycling facilities for large bulky items
Lovell Johns can assist Councils in mapping their refuse and recycling resources and strategies. We can produce hardcopy maps of recycling centres to accompany publicity material or we can plot the resources on an interactive map using the Google Maps API. We can produce drive-time maps to analyse the accessibility of bring back centres and offer advice and consultancy on refuse and recycling collection route optimisation.
