The campaigning public health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) approached Lovell Johns with a need an online statistical mapping tool to help illustrate the link between cigarette smoking and deprivation. The client held relevant data on smoking prevalence at administrative ward level and required this to be compared to the socio-economic dataset on deprivation level.
To create the mapping tool, Lovell Johns used the latest Index of Multiple Deprivation data available form the Office of National Statistics and matched this dataset to the ward level smoking prevalence data available from male and female.
The mapping data is stored in a mySQL database, with queries handled by PHP and XML programming languages. The mapping was animated using Flash. The mapping tool also includes a management interface with access to an XML feed database which allows the dynamic update of the datasets by the administrators at ASH.
