When choosing between 2D and 3D cartographic design for any project, there are number of factors we usually discuss with the client to help them decide on the best approach: the target audience and their expectations for detail and orientation; what style of map is currently being successfully used for this audience; and of course, the design cost. Here, we take a look at both approaches.

The Pros and Cons of 2D Cartography

Pros

Simplicity and Familiarity: 2D maps are universally understood and easy to use for most audiences. Road atlases, OS walking maps and reference atlases all use 2D cartography to good visual effect.

Accurate Measurement: unless deliberate distortion is used by the cartographer, 2D maps accurately depict relative distances and angles and thus provide precise measurements for tasks like site layout and wayfinding.

Cost: 2D maps are usually less expensive to produce than 3D maps as they are less time-consuming to design. The design of 3D maps can require specialist cartographic software and different design skills to traditional cartography.

Cons

Limited Depth and Context: 2D maps cannot represent complexities such as changes in elevation in a visually intuitive way that 3D maps can. Users of 2D maps may struggle to interpret abstract symbols such as contour lines where a 3D map can better convey the landscape.

Limited Interactivity and Engagement: 2D maps generally offer limited interaction, restricting users to a fixed, top-down perspective. This can make for a less engaging map for tourist destinations, visitor attractions and school campuses to name a few examples.

The Pros and Cons of 3D Cartography

Pros

Realism and Detail: 3D map design offers a lifelike representation of the environment with depth and volume, which enhances the user’s understanding of complex landscapes. Detailed sites and campuses with changing elevation can be better communicated to the user, allowing easier navigation and orientation.

Added interest: When 3D maps feature building frontages and detailed Points of Interest, the user is drawn in more. This approach is more engaging and fun to use for visitors.

Cons

Complexity and Cost: the design process for 3D mapping is more time-consuming and therefore expensive. The cartographic skillset is slightly different and the sheer number of hours needed is greater for 3D representation.

Occlusion: 3D maps must be drawn from an agreed angle and perspective. Even with a steep perspective view, tall features such as buildings can obscure information in the background meaning other detail is potentially obscured.

Whilst 2D maps provide clarity, cost-effectiveness, and precise measurement of horizontal distances, 3D maps can provide superior realism, depth perception, and a comprehensive understanding of complex terrain and structures. In reality, the best approach is often project dependent. A simple road map is best in 2D, while a complex university campus may benefit greatly from 3D visualization.

When working with an atlas publisher – whether undertaking the cartographic design of a new atlas from scratch or updating the mapping information in a new edition, there are several key considerations to ensure the project has a successful outcome. Here we take a brief look at some of the key factors for the cartographer to consider:

Content Accuracy & Quality

The cartographer must ensure geographical accuracy at all times, by using up-to-date map data derived from authoritative sources such as national mapping agencies. The accuracy and authenticity of thematic map data is equally important, particularly when the atlas covers topics such as climate, politics, or economics. Visual consistency across the atlas is also essential, including the uniformity of symbols, colour schemes, map scales, and projections.

Map Design & Style

In terms of map design and style, the choice of map projection should align with the purpose of each map. For example, the Mercator, Robinson, or Winkel Tripel projections may be most suitable based on the thematic or regional focus. The level of detail should be tailored according to the target audience; an atlas for schoolchildren requires a different level of granularity compared to one designed for adult academic researchers. A clear cartographic hierarchy should be designed to guide the viewer’s eye to key elements such as titles, borders, and cities. Map labelling and typography need to be legible and free from clutter, ensuring that overlapping labels do not hinder readability.

Target Audience & Purpose

Understanding the target audience and the intended purpose of the atlas is critical. Whether the atlas is designed for educational use, general reference, or a thematic focus—such as historical or environmental analysis—will influence the approach to content, visual complexity, and narrative tone. Considerations of reading level and visual accessibility should also be made to ensure appropriate engagement with the material.

Data Sources & Licensing

The sources and licensing of data play a pivotal role in the content development of the atlas. The cartographic expert should ensure that appropriate data licensing is in place to cover source GIS data, satellite imagery, thematic sources such as census data and even flags. The licensing terms and whether data is open-source, commercially licensed and / or provided by the publisher will all impact both budget and usage rights.

Authoring Responsibilities

In working with an atlas publisher, it’s essential to agree at the outset on defined roles and specifically on authoring responsibilities. The cartographer needs a clear definition on their role with the map specification and design process and possibly also on who is writing explanatory text, creating illustrations, charts, or infographics. The publisher will also want to agree on editorial standards, stages, deadlines and word counts to ensure and successful collaboration.

Tools and File Formats

Finally, the tools and file formats used throughout the atlas production programme should also be agreed on and standardized wherever possible. Whether using ArcGIS, QGIS, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, or other software, the final deliverables should be in acceptable formats such as vector files, high-resolution TIFFs, or PDFs. It’s also helpful to have a version control or collaborative editing workflow in place.

In conclusion, producing a high-quality atlas requires careful coordination across multiple areas—from ensuring data accuracy and selecting the right map projections to understanding the audience, managing timelines, and navigating legal or licensing requirements. Each stage of the process, whether creative, technical, or administrative, plays a critical role in shaping the final product. Clear communication, defined responsibilities, and attention to detail will help ensure that the atlas is not only visually compelling and informative but also reliable, accessible, and fit for its intended purpose.

The tourism industry leverages mapping as a powerful tool to promote holiday destinations, local attractions, and in its overall marketing strategy for several key reasons. Maps provide an intuitive, visual way to help potential travellers understand the geography, accessibility, and surrounding attractions of a destination. By integrating maps into promotional materials, tourism organisations and businesses make it easier for potential visitors to plan their trips, visualize their experience, and feel more confident in their travel decisions.

For Clarity and Accessibility
One of the primary benefits of mapping in the tourism industry is clarity. Maps simplify complex information about a destination’s layout, locations of key attractions, and transportation routes. For instance, maps can show the proximity of local landmarks, beaches, museums and restaurants, helping visitors easily navigate the area and discover points of interest. By offering clear visual guidance, maps remove the guesswork for tourists and ensure they can plan their visits with confidence.

Enhanced Planning and Customization
Maps help tourists visualize their itineraries and make decisions about where to go. For example, interactive maps on websites or mobile apps allow travellers to select specific points of interest and create customized routes. Tourist boards use maps to highlight key sites within walking distance or well-connected by public transportation, encouraging visitors to explore a broader area rather than just a few well-known locations. This helps to distribute tourist traffic more evenly, benefiting less-visited areas and boosting local economies.

Promoting Local Attractions and Hidden Gems
By using maps, tourism marketers can showcase not only major attractions but also lesser known “hidden gems” that may otherwise be overlooked. Maps can highlight unique experiences, such as scenic trails, local restaurants, cultural hotspots, or unique photo opportunities, making these more accessible to tourists. For destinations looking to promote sustainability and off-the-beaten-path travel, mapping is an ideal way to guide visitors toward more eco-friendly and culturally enriching experiences, which can enhance the overall appeal of the area.

Marketing and Branding
In terms of marketing, maps are an essential component of destination branding. By presenting a destination’s layout and attractions in a well-designed map, tourism organizations can communicate a sense of identity, encouraging tourists to visit specific areas and immerse themselves in the local culture. Maps also serve as practical souvenirs or reference materials during a trip, extending the destination’s branding presence even after the visitor has left.

In conclusion, the integration of mapping in tourism marketing helps enhance a tourist’s experience, making destinations more accessible, customizable, and appealing. It simplifies planning, promotes lesser-known attractions, and supports effective destination branding.

Good map design is an intricate process that involves several stages, from initial concept to final implementation. These stages ensure that the map is not only functional but also aesthetically appealing and user-friendly. Here are the typical stages involved in the design of a high-quality map:

Purpose and Audience Identification

The first step in map design is identifying the purpose of the map and the audience it is intended for. A map designed for tourists will look very different from one intended for technical analysis by geologists or urban planners. This stage involves understanding what information needs to be conveyed, why it’s needed, and who will use it. For example, a tourist map needs clear, easily interpretable symbols and a simple layout, while a topographic map requires more detailed information about elevation and landforms.

Data Collection and Analysis

Once the purpose and audience are clear, the next step is data collection. The map designer gathers the relevant geographic data required for the map, which could include terrain, roads, water bodies, political boundaries, and more. In some cases, this data might come from public sources, satellite imagery, or ground research. It’s essential to ensure that the data is accurate and up to date, as incorrect data can lead to misleading or confusing maps.

Map Design Framework

With the data in hand, the next stage is to create a framework or layout for the map. This involves deciding on the map’s scale, projection, and orientation. The scale is particularly important because it determines the level of detail and the area that will be shown on the map. The projection will affect how the 3D world is represented in 2D, influencing the appearance of distances and shapes. Additionally, deciding on the orientation (whether the map will be oriented north-up or another direction) helps guide users’ navigation.

Symbolization

The stage of symbolization involves choosing how to represent various features of the map, such as cities, roads, rivers, and other landmarks. Symbols should be intuitive and universally recognizable. This might involve selecting from pre-existing sets of symbols (like those used in road maps) or designing custom ones that best fit the map’s purpose. The colour palette also plays a critical role, as it can help differentiate between different types of features (e.g., blue for water, green for parks or forests).

Map Labelling and Typography

Once the features are symbolized, the map designer must decide how to label these features. Effective labelling ensures that users can quickly interpret the map. The choice of font, size, and text placement is crucial in making the labels legible and not overwhelming. For instance, place names should be placed in areas where they do not overlap with other features, and the font should be clear and consistent across the map.

Refinement and Aesthetics

At this stage, the map is polished for aesthetic appeal and readability. A well-designed map should strike a balance between functionality and beauty. Colours should be harmonious and used consistently to make the map easier to interpret. The designer also needs to ensure that the map isn’t overcrowded with too much information, which can confuse the viewer. Effective use of whitespace and appropriate layering of elements is key.

Testing and Feedback

Before finalizing the map, it’s important to gather feedback. This might involve testing the map with a small sample of the intended audience. Do they find the map easy to understand and useful for its intended purpose? Are the symbols and labels clear? Based on the feedback, designers make any necessary revisions to improve the map’s effectiveness.

Final Production and Distribution

Once revisions have been made, the map is ready for final production. Whether it is to be printed or made available digitally, the map must be formatted for its intended medium. Digital maps might require additional coding, like interactivity or responsive design. In contrast, printed maps need to be prepared with appropriate resolution and quality for production.

Conclusion

In summary, effective map design requires a clear understanding of the purpose and audience, accurate data, thoughtful visual representation, and ongoing refinement. By following these stages, map designers can create useful, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing maps that serve their intended function.

Quality Cartographic Design is being used across many different community projects and initiatives every day. Community – focused maps can be powerful tools that provide a range of benefits to local residents, organizations and wider stakeholders. Here, we look at five key ways in which they can deliver value:

1. Enhanced Local Engagement: Community – focused maps can be a useful visual aid to encourage residents to participate in the local planning and decision-making processes. By involving them in the mapping of their neighbourhoods, communities can foster a sense of ownership and pride, leading to increased engagement in local matters. Local Development Forums make use of accurate maps to engage stakeholders in the planning process.

2. Resource Identification for residents: Good map design can help to highlight local resources, such as parks, libraries, and social services. Creating a good map can help residents better access vital information and services, improving their quality of life. Parish councils will often display a community-focused map on their noticeboard, helping residents and visitors to take full advantage of local amenities.

3. Enable Economic Development: Town Centre Managers and Destination Management Organisations can use mapping to highlight local businesses and attractions, supporting tourism and local economies. A map can help improve visitor footfall and dwell-time as part of a wider wayfinding and information strategy. We see such mapping in many Town Centres, perhaps at arrival points where visitors can quickly get a feel for what’s on offer.

4. Promote Local Greenspace and Biodiversity: By focusing the user on greenspace and biodiversity in the local area, a community map can encourage residents to increase their engagement with nature. A map which focuses on woodland, natural habitats and wildlife can promote interest in the local environment. Local interest groups take this approach by having a map resource focused on the outdoors.

5. Promoting health and wellbeing: Community maps can provide improved health and wellbeing by promoting local walks and cycle trails in the area. Allied to sustainable transport initiatives, good map design can encourage communities to rethink how they move around, commute and take exercise. Local government and even businesses utilise health and wellbeing-focused mapping to deliver benefits for citizens and employees.

These benefits demonstrate some of the ways in which good Community-focused maps can deliver benefits to stakeholders, residents and visitors to towns and neighbourhoods.

Because good map design is depicting real-world geographic features, the moment a map is published it’s potentially out of date and inaccurate. Here, we take a look at a few use cases where it’s so important to keep maps updated, whether they are delivered in a digital or printed format:

For accuracy in navigation: Outdated maps can lead to confusion, errors in navigation and of course wasted time for individuals trying to find their way around. Many of us come across examples when prompted to update a car sat nav for the latest map data release, or of course discover that what they see ahead of them is not what’s on screen!.

For emergency services and response use: Holding up to date accurate maps is essential for emergency services, search and rescue operations and disaster response efforts. Outdated maps may no longer depict the latest changes in infrastructure, such as new roads, bridges, or buildings, potentially endangering lives in emergency situations. The so-called Blue Light users primarily use digital mapping systems but in fact still rely on printed mapping as back-up.

For operational efficiency: Every day, our businesses rely on maps within Telematics solutions for accurate logistics planning, routing optimisation and in turn to make timely deliveries. Updated maps ensure that resources are allocated efficiently, also reducing fuel consumption and travel time costs associated with transportation of goods.

For urban planning purposes: Town and City planners rely on the most accurate mapping as a basis for analysis of say, population density, traffic patterns and land use constraints. Up-to-date maps provide a sound basis for decision making on future development and the provision of a wide range of public services.

For tourism and recreation use: Because maps help visitors get around town centres and outdoor enthusiasts explore and plan recreational activities, map publishers risk losing their audiences by failing to maintain accurate map bases. Indeed, Travel Guide publishers seek to differentiate themselves by claiming to have the latest information on attractions, trails, and amenities.

For environmental management: Conservationists and environmental scientists rely on accurate and up to date maps to help monitor changes in ecosystems, track wildlife habitats, and identify areas of ecological significance. Timely updates to maps help support biodiversity conservation efforts and sustainable land management practices.

Of course, most publishers of maps are acutely aware of this issue and so have ongoing editorial update programmes to allow their appointed cartographers to update the relevant map graphics files. Overall, the importance of keeping maps up to date cannot be overstated. Whether for navigation, safety, planning, or environmental management, accurate and current maps are essential tools for individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide.

In an era where technology has revolutionized navigation, the age-old debate between digital maps and paper maps persists. Should we embrace the convenience and versatility of digital mapping tools, or strive to uphold the charm and reliability of traditional paper maps? This brief exploration delves into the merits of each, weighing up the benefits and drawbacks to of digital and paper maps.

In the modern age of smartphones and GPS devices, the allure of digital maps is undoubtedly strong with promises of real-time updates, interactive features, and seamless navigation. Yet, amidst this digital revolution, the timeless tradition of paper maps still appeals to many and is somewhat cherished by both adventurers and purists alike for their tangible charm and reliability.

The Case for Digital Maps:

Convenience at Your Fingertips: With digital maps, the world is literally at your fingertips. Smartphone apps and GPS devices offer instant access to detailed maps, allowing users to navigate unfamiliar terrain with ease.

Real-Time Updates: One of the greatest advantages of digital maps is their ability to provide real-time updates on traffic conditions, road closures, and points of interest. This dynamic feature ensures that users are always equipped with the latest information to optimize their journey.

Customization and Interactivity: Digital maps empower users with customizable features and interactive tools, enabling them to tailor their experience according to their preferences. From satellite imagery to 3D and street views, the possibilities for exploration are many any varied.

The Appeal of Paper Maps:

Tactile Experience: There’s a certain nostalgia associated with unfolding a paper map and tracing your finger along winding roads and scenic routes. The tactile experience of manipulating a physical map adds a sense of adventure to the journey, fostering a deeper connection with the landscape.

Reliability in Remote Areas: In regions where internet connectivity may be unreliable or non-existent, paper maps reign supreme. Unlike their digital counterparts, paper maps don’t rely on electronic signals or batteries, making them indispensable companions for off-grid adventures.

No Distractions: In a world inundated with digital distractions, paper maps offer a respite from the constant barrage of notifications and alerts. By disconnecting from screens and immersing oneself in the tangible world of cartography, users can savour the serenity of the journey.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, the choice between digital maps and paper maps boils down to personal preference and the specific demands of the journey. While digital maps excel in terms of convenience and real-time updates, paper maps offer a sense of nostalgia, reliability, and freedom from distractions. Whether embarking on a cross-country road trip or hiking through remote wilderness, both digital and paper maps serve as indispensable tools for navigation and exploration, guiding users along the path to discovery.

It is widely recognised that physical activity, particularly if undertaken outdoors, can help support good Mental Health and general wellbeing. Since we spend such a lot of time in the workplace, as employers, we should look to address the wellbeing of staff. Many companies actively encourage light exercise and outdoor activity as a means of encouraging staff to perform better and to feel motivated and focussed.

Improvements in work/life balance can help reduce workplace stress and lead to happier, healthier staff. MIND, the UK mental health charity, state that “60 per cent of employees say they’d feel more motivated and more likely to recommend their organisation as a good place to work if their employer took action to support mental wellbeing.”

One way to address this “workplace wellness” is to create a map to encourage employees to leave the office, have a proper break and take some physical exercise. This has been adopted by the Civil Aviation Authority, who identified a need to produce maps to highlight locations for walking, cycling and exercising around their UK sites. Gyms, shops and green spaces are all highlighted, with suggested walk and cycle routes, with panels on the benefits of exercise outdoors.

Engineering and design company Parsons Brinckerhoff (now WSP) took a slightly different approach to highlight the value of active travel in commuting to and from their office in Bracknell. Highlighting public transport, local shops and businesses, as well as pedestrian and cycle routes, the map shows radial circles for walking distances from the station.

Milton Park, south of Oxford, is a science and technology park with over 250 businesses within a rural site. They encourage active travel to and from the site but also wanted to highlight the various locations for relaxation within the park, including quiet areas, nature gardens and walking and cycling routes.

An alternative map was made with illustrations to highlight the flora to be found around the park, as well as the prescribed walks.

East Kilbride Community Trust required a map to publicise walking routes and the natural features to be seen in woodland located within a residential/light industrial area. The focus of the map was to encourage engagement with nature in a more urban area.

In summary, a map can be a useful tool to help address employee wellbeing, satisfaction and perhaps even improve productivity. Such assets can encourage active travel, promote lunchtime walks and ultimately improve staff with wellbeing.

The post How maps can help Wellness in the Workplace appeared first on Lovell Johns.

Most of us would probably describe an atlas as a collection of printed maps or charts, usually having a consistent design throughout. However, when we dig a little deeper there are in fact several different types of atlas as outlined below.

The Reference Atlas

Probably the most common type of atlas, the Reference Atlas is a large format book containing detailed information in the form of maps, tables, images, text and usually an index to visually describe a specific geographic entity such as a continent or country. The Reference Atlas will often also contain facts, figures and infographics.

A good example of such a reference atlas is The National Geographic Atlas of the World which includes information about the entire globe, broken down into chapters that discuss the human and the natural world. This atlas also features sections on geology, plate tectonics, biogeography, political and economic geography for example.

Focused on a smaller geography, The Atlas of Yellowstone is also a reference atlas though, looking at a very specific area rather than the whole world. This publication presents information on the human, physical and biogeography of only the Yellowstone region.

The Historic Atlas

The Historic Atlas is designed to focus on a specific period in history. Such a publication could be global in its’ focus – perhaps a 19th century Atlas of the World – or could take a detailed look at a historically significant town or city. The Historic Towns Trust, publish such historic atlases of specific towns and cities in England, Scotland and Wales, depicting urban development over time.

The School Atlas

Most of us will remember using an atlas in a geography lesson at school, perhaps the Philip’s Modern School Atlas, now in it’s 100th Edition! Such a reference atlas is specifically designed for the student – in this case ages 14-18 – and contains a wealth of information on topics including remote sensing and GIS as well as traditional map plates.

The Thematic Atlas

The Thematic Atlas focuses on a specific topic or theme, usually bringing together data in the form of maps, tables, charts and perhaps infographics to tell a story. Thematic atlases are developed for all age groups but are particularly found in scientific and environmental publishing where thematic maps and supporting information are brought together to create a narrative. As with the School Atlas, getting the level of content appropriate to the audience is key. The Atlas of Global Surface Water Dynamics is such a Thematic Atlas and, in this case, provides a printed narrative for the online web portal – the Global Surface Water Explorer.

The Street or Road Atlas

Street and Road Atlases are designed for navigation and as such are usually paperback and often spiral bound to make them easier to handle while traveling. Unliked the reference atlas format, these atlases focus on information that may be useful to travelers, such as specific road or highway networks, the locations of parks or other tourist spots, and, in some cases, the locations of specific stores and/or hotels.

Not only the production and presentation of atlases have changed. Recent developments in digital technology have also affected the way atlases and their maps are used to communicate geographic knowledge. Today, atlases are increasingly produced as digital or electronic versions, which range from low-level view-only atlases to online high-quality analytical atlas information systems. However, paper atlases still play a role, particularly as educational resources.

When we talk about ‘large scale’ mapping, we often mean a map or plan showing a small area of land or physical space in detail – such as a CAD plan or drawing. Beyond such architectural-style CAD plans, there are in fact many different use cases of large-scale maps and plans in the Cartographic World; from entire site mapping for Estates and Facilities Management through to discreet detailed room plans for familiarisation and evacuation purposes.

Many organisations, from schools to large factories may already hold CAD drawings, architectural PDFs or even hand-drawn plans. Although such sources are useful, they often include far too much detail to be of use for navigation and wayfinding purposes, or indeed they may just not show key pieces of information clearly enough. Taking the example of developing a wayfinding and evacuation map from a detailed CAD plan, the cartographic design process would strip away detail of internal plants and assemblies to focus on thoroughfares and escape routes. The available CAD plans may also need to be reworked into a consistent set of ‘blueprints’ for a site, with an emphasis on the relevant information for the intended purpose.

We can take a look at some examples of large-scale site mapping and floor plans:

Helping to promote the available facilities

Detailed hotel floor plans and room plans are being used by the Travel, Leisure and Hospitality Sectors to help promote their facilities and ultimately help convert an enquiry into a confirmed room booking. The hotel sector – in particular the luxury, upmarket and boutique sectors – are using such plans to sell the room facilities including furniture, room layout and conference facilities.

2. For Wayfinding and Navigation

Detailed building and floor plans are being used increasingly for wayfinding and navigation purposes by high-traffic sites such as schools and universities. Such maps can help with estate planning and management, site deliveries and not least with Open Days for prospective parents and students. Such detailed floor plans are also being used to describe subject areas and also for fire and safety evacuation.

3. For Health and Safety and Accessibility

Large commercial and industrial sites such as factories and warehouses may require evacuation plans for employee safety and compliance measures. Such plans can also be very useful in providing enhanced information on accessibility, exit points and the presence of steps and ramps within large and complex sites.

4. Efficiencies across a super-site

A very large and complex site with multiple floors such as a mega-warehouse can benefit hugely from improved floor plans and maps, especially in times of a fluid workforce. The use of carefully designed site plans with useful symbols to assist easy recognition of key landmarks can provide efficiencies for employees across a huge site. Such detailed floor plans can also be used to show communal facilities, first-aid bays, stairwells as well as signposting locations of products by easy to read themes and categories.

In summary, there are many possible uses of large-scale maps. By stripping back existing plans, the cartographic design process can deliver many benefits for stakeholders including clients, employees and visitors across many different types of organization.
