Engaging, clear Campus Maps for a variety of users
Requirement
The University of Nottingham was about to undergo a recruitment campaign and had identified a good Campus Map design as a key tool for open day visits.
Nottingham were looking for a map company to create a new Campus Map that would be more engaging, easier to navigate and bring the Campuses to life for a wide range of users. The Corporate Marketing Department approached several map companies with a Creative Brief for the re-creation of the University Campus Maps.
Following a competitive procurement exercise, Lovell Johns were chosen as the preferred map company for the new mapping resource.
Solution
Nottingham had put forward some preferred styles of Campus Map design from other Universities but also liked some of the examples put forward in our proposal. A detailed discussion around style and content took place at the Project Inception meeting involving the key University stakeholders and Lovell Johns’ cartographers.
Three Campus Maps were drawn to a common design with a high level of 3D illustration for key buildings. A new map key was developed to reflect the new design and improve on the outdated and confusing previous version.
Buildings have been clearly identified to help with navigation around the sites. The use of a green background colour and the addition of tree icons helps to convey the impression of Nottingham as an open and pleasant site.
Result
The maps were all delivered in time for the Open Day print deadline within 4 weeks and are available on the website.
Wenonah Barton, Head of Student Recruitment (Events and Outreach) commented:
‘’We are extremely happy with the work that your team produced in the time available, and the overall look and ease of use of the maps has been very well received by colleagues so far.’’
