Business Improvement District (BID) Mapping

By January 22nd 2015

A Business Improvement District (BID) is a defined area in which local businesses contribute a levy to promote the area to encourage customers and invite investment. The Business Improvement District (BID) members are likely to be made up of people from the local community, each with a vested interest in a local retail outlet or commercial business. These may be retail outlet owners, business people or local council members.

Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) were introduced by Government legislation and they tend to run for a set period, following which a vote takes place to decide on progress. The Business Improvement District may then continue to operate for a further period.

As a Business Improvement District (BID) tends to cover a small geographic area, a Business Improvement District (BID) map will often be required. This may show features such as:

  • Parking regulations and locations
  • Retail locations
  • Transport hubs
  • Future development sites
  • Points of interest/tourist attractions
  • Accommodation locations

The purpose of the Business Improvement District (BID) map is to encourage consumers into the Business Improvement District (BID) area and to facilitate use by visitors and investors alike. The map may show detail at street level, with very specific annotations of shops, parking spaces, etc. The actual Business Improvement District (BID) area is often highlighted in some way to focus the eye to the main area of interest. The Business Improvement District (BID) map may make use of the corporate colours used by the Business Improvement District (BID) to add a professional look to the map.

Business Improvement District mapping is a straightforward means to promote the organisation to prospective members and to the public. A map is proved to be something which consumers will keep for future reference and therefore presents an excellent means of promotion. Some Business Improvement District maps may also be funded by advertising and provide an easily accessible ‘front window’ for local businesses which may struggle to fund advertising by alternative means.

Lovell Johns have produced several Business Improvement District (BID) maps. Each one is quite unique as the area to be highlighted, the number of interested businesses and the amount of information to display vary. A more urban Business Improvement District (BID) map may focus on parking regulations and local development opportunities whereas a rural Business Improvement District (BID) map may have a requirement to highlight tourist attractions and leisure facilities. For each, a basic street level map is edited to show the correct level of information and styled to incorporate corporate colours and logos. This is then added to as required for the final Business Improvement District (BID)map with additional features, which may be provided by the client or are editorially researched, either through desktop work or ground research. The Business Improvement District (BID) map can thus be tailored to suit all requirements and to provide the perfect tool for promotion of a Business Improvement District (BID).
