A series of family history maps

Requirement

Lovell Johns were approached by a self-publishing author writing a book about his Great, Great Uncle Charles Heakes, who he discovered had served in both the Boer and First World Wars.  The author was seeking cartographic design expertise for a series of 5 black and white maps showing routes taken over these time periods.

Solution

Referencing the preferred style of maps from our website, the client outlined the geographic scope to allow us to quote and also provided a sketched route for each map.  Each map depicts Charles Heakes’ journeys at different parts of his military career in deliberately simple and clear style.

Result

The book was published in 2024 and dedicated to Heakes family members.  Author Dave Wilson commented ‘The maps are better than a thousand words – they allow you to quickly see his movements in the army and really add a professional touch to his story’.
