Mapping the village of Great Missenden, home to author Roald Dahl
Requirement
Great Missenden & Prestwood Revitalisation Group, one of seven revitalisation groups in towns and villages within the Chiltern District, contacted Lovell Johns in 2019 with an interest in developing an illustrated map of the village of Great Missenden, home to children’s author Roald Dahl for 36 years.
Solution
With funding secured, the client started to draw up an initial list of features to be illustrated such as key buildings, public footpaths, the Roald Dahl Museum, Missenden Abbey, the Library, St Peter and St Paul Church and local pubs. A site visit was arranged for our illustrator to tour the area and visit the key destinations. An initial pencil sketch was produced to show the locations of the landmarks and other key structures, which was approved by the client before the final and full coloured versions including the hand-drawn lettering
Result
The final artwork took around two months to complete from original inception to the supply of the final image file and is the centrepiece of the new village noticeboard as seen here. Rights were granted for use of artwork in leaflets and posters.
Client Michael Wintgens commented ‘‘We were delighted with the map. We propose to launch in leaflet form to all potential businesses and shops who will I am sure find it very helpful in promoting themselves and our village.’’
