Requirement
Lovell Johns were approached by The Faculty of Education and Society in 2025 with a requirement for a series of artistic maps to show the former locations of a number of independent colleges that later merged to become one university, UCL. The maps were needed for the forthcoming book Student London: A New History of Higher Education in the Capital.
Solution
The maps needed to show the locations of the institutions that merged with UCL, including halls of residence, at two snapshots of time. The specific requirement was for a ‘retro’ style; the client was able to point to a favoured design style of a simple black and white base map with distinctive illustrated buildings.
Result
The 1930s and 1980s maps share the same base map features and have similar road naming detail. The maps depict how the different independent colleges became part of UCL over time. As well as being published here, the maps have been used a lot in recent talks.
