This A2 map poster had to convey a lot of information in a small space
Requirement
London-based illustrated non-fiction publisher, Amber Books, approached Lovell Johns to create an A2 sized map poster of Vietnam, both to show the country within the surrounding area but also to convey information on the battles and troop movements during the Vietnam War.
Solution
The client supplied a variety of six different source references, all of which had to be incorporated into a base map, whilst still retaining legibility and clarity of message. The base map was created from open source data, with hill shading added to give the image some interest. All reference images were geo-referenced to fit the map base and the detail traced off.
The challenge, as with any map for publishers, was to show the amount of information required without overcrowding the map – this was achieved by the use of clear symbols, ‘leadered’ information boxes and distinct colours to highlight key data. All information is related to a key to reduce text on the map face.
Result
The map was completed to schedule and approved by the client for inclusion in their publication.
