Lovell Johns design artistic and stylised maps for the non-fiction publisher. Artistic maps are characterised by a slightly different feel and texture to a traditional map by the cartographer’s use of artistic effects such as pastels or watercolours to arrive at a stylised and atmospheric map.

The artistic map or stylised map will often have a unique theme, usually evident from the design brief provided by the client. The cartographic design process for artistic maps tends to more creative than for the traditional map, perhaps calling for a distortion of the underlying geography to convey a particular message and the use of distinct colours and tones.
